A bank of filter cells (1, 2) is connected via a multi-way valve (3, 3) with the dirty fluid tank (8) and the contaminated fluid tank (7) receiving filter backwashing fluid. Further lines (9) connect the filter cells to the tank (6) for filtered fluid. The unit also includes a drum filter (12, 13) connected to the contaminated fluid tank (7). A pump (4) transfers fluid from the dirty fluid tank (8), through the filter cells. The multi-way valve is a 2/3 way valve. The pump is located in the line (10) connecting the dirty fluid tank and the multi way valve. A backwashing line (11) connects the multi-way valve and filter cells. A pressure control valve (5) is placed in the line between the cells and the purified fluid tank (6). The backwashing fluid tank (7) is a simple collection tank, a settlement tank or an interception bag. Partially-purified backwashing fluid from the drum filter enters a collection tank (8a) connected to the dirty fluid tank (8). A multi-way valve, or one multi-way valve per filter cell, also connects the line (9) to the dirty fluid tank. The filter cells use a backwashable paper cartridge element.
