PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon black for use in compounding a tire tread rubber, which prevents the reduction of workability due to viscosity increase in a rubber composition comprising carbon black and also improves controllability and stability on a dry road surface. SOLUTION: The carbon black for compounding into a tire tread rubber has basic characteristics characterized by a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area (N<SB>2</SB>SA) of larger than 130 m<SP>2</SP>/g but smaller than 210 m<SP>2</SP>/g and DBP oil absorption (DBPA) of 100-180 cm<SP>3</SP>/100 g. Here, (A) among aggregate properties measured by a centrifugal sedimentation analysis, the mode value (Dst) in a distribution curve of a stokes diameter is 35-65 nm, and (B) the variance component (γd) of a surface free energy satisfies the formula (1).
