An apparatus and a method for classifying a vehicle type by using a vehicle lateral shape are provided to detect the vehicle type by implementing a beam curtain, which is formed by beams radiated from plural beam sensors. An apparatus for classifying a vehicle type includes a beam detector(300), a speed detector(310), a lateral shape generating unit(320) and a vehicle type classifying unit(330). The beam detector detects beam positions blocked by a vehicle when the vehicle is passed through a beam curtain formed by radiating beams from plural beam sensors, which are formed in a vertical direction. The speed detector detects speed of the vehicle. The lateral shape generating unit generates a lateral shape of the vehicle based on the beam positions and the speed of the vehicle. The vehicle type classifying unit classifies the vehicle type based on the lateral shape. |
