An electron emission display device is provided to increase the degree of vacuum in a vacuum envelope by maintaining an interval between electrodes extending outwardly from the vacuum envelope. A first substrate(2) and a second substrate(4) are placed opposite to each other. A side member(6) is placed on edges of the first and second substrates to form an vacuum envelope together with the first and second substrates. An electron emission element is provided on the first substrate, and has an electron emission portion and drive electrodes(8) controlling the electron emission portion. A light emitting unit is provided on the second substrate to emit visible rays from the electrons emitted from the electron emission portion. The drive electrodes extend across the side member to an exterior of the vacuum envelope. An interval of the drive electrodes is equal to or more than 100 micrometers.
