PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a confocal microscope which maintains a high precision of sectioning resolution changes even when being focused by observing an image obtained from light having passed a pinhole having a large diameter. SOLUTION: The confocal microscope includes: a condensing optical system for condensing an emitted luminous flux from a sample 10; a light separating member 19 disposed in the vicinity of a pupil surface of the condensing optical system; a light shielding means which uses pinholes different by diameters to transmit light within only a specific focal range, out of luminous fluxes separated by the light separating member 19; detection means 21a to 21c for detecting light having passed the pinholes; and image composition devices 22 and 25 which image respective detected luminous fluxes synchronously with a scanning optical system. The image composition devices have a function of calculating the degree of focusing of an image formed by light having passed a pinhole having the smallest diameter and displaying a calculation result when focusing the confocal microscope by observing an image formed by light having passed a pinhole having a large diameter.
