<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramic body whose substrate is made of a cordierite porous material with a high temperature stability and a high specific surface area, on the surface of which acicular particles are formed and a part or the whole surface of the acicular particles are coated with a component different from the acicular particles, and a ceramic catalyst body. <P>SOLUTION: In the ceramic body which is used as a porous substrate for a catalyst or a filter for purifying an exhaust gas and has acicular particles on its surface contacting the exhaust gas, acicular particles consisting of a component different from the main component of the substrate are formed on the surface of the porous substrate. The acicular particles are polycrystalline bodies having minute unevenness. Therefore, the specific surface area is large, the reduction of the specific surface area caused by sintering is suppressed, the heat capacity is small, and the early activation as a catalyst is realized.
