<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting unit in which heat dissipation of an end part of a fluorescent discharge tube is inhibited more than that in conventional practice, thereby inhibiting deterioration of brightness of the fluorescent discharge tube due to long usage. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting unit comprises a light guide plate 10, a fluorescent discharge tube 1 arranged on a side of the light guide plate 10 and having an electrode portion 6 on its end part, a lead wire 2 having a contact 3 connected to an electrode portion 6 of the fluorescent discharge tube 1, and a holder 4 having a cavity 5 inside which involves the end part of the fluorescent discharge tube 1 and the contact 3 of the lead wire 2.
