[Also in Division B3] Apparatus for buffing a tyre casing 14 comprises means 10 for mounting the casing for movement in one direction, means 16 for mounting a buffing or rasping wheel 18 for movement in a direction perpendicular to the said one direction, a template 28 secured to one means and a follower 30 secure to the other means, and means for urging the template and follower into engagement. The means 10 consists of a carriage which is movable along guide ways 150, 152 and carries a pedestal 12 rotatably supporting a shaft 118 carrying a hub 110 for the tyre casing, the shaft being driven by a chain drive 116 from a motor 112. The buffing wheel 18 is mounted for rotation about a vertical axis on a motor 24, which may be air driven, secured to an upright plate 54 of a carriage, comprising the means 16, having a base plate 52. The carriage is slidable along guide ways 56, 58 and has spaced brackets 62 each of which carries rollers 66, 70 (Fig. 8) engaging the upper and lower surfaces of its associated guide rail 56. A nut depends from the carriage 16 and engages a lead screw 80 driven by a chain drive 88 from a motor 84, the direction of rotation of the motor being controlled by limit switches to effect reciprocation of the carriage 26. A support plate 100 is secured to the carriage and carries the template 28 which has the desired profile to be formed on the tyre casing. The template is engaged by the follower 30 which is carried by a sleeve 134, Fig. 3, non-rotatably but axially slidable in a bushing 136 secured to the carriage 10. The sleeve is internally threaded and engaged by a screw 130 connected by a chain 126 to a screw 120 which is rotatably supported in the upper end of the pedestal 12 and provided with a hand wheel 50. An indicator 122 is mounted on the screw and cooperates with a scale 124 to indicate the setting of the follower, effected by rotation of the screw 130 in the sleeve 134. A gauge 143 is provided to indicate the amount of tread on the casing. The means for urging the follower into engagement with the template may consist of a spring or, as shown, a pneumatic motor having a cylinder 156 secured to a base 154 of the apparatus and a piston 159 secured to the carriage 20. The pedestal 12 has a control panel having buttons controlling the inflation and deflation of the tyre, the motors controlling the rotation of the tyre casing and a buffing wheel, and the motors controlling the reciprocation of the carriage 26 and movement of the carriage 20 to engage the tyre casing with the buffing wheel. The buffing wheel is enclosed in a casing 164 which has brushes 165 for engaging opposite sides of the wheel and is connected by a flexible conduit 20 to a suction device 25, 26 which discharges shavings to a conduit 26.</p> |
