An access network (NW1) has nodes (N1, N2, N3) and a controller (NC1). The network is via copper lines (L1 .L4) connected to subscribers (S1...S4), which can have a TV (TV1), a telephone (PH1) and a computer (PC1).The copper lines (Ll L4), which have a limited transmission capacity, are configured by a configuration toll (CT1). A problem is to configure the copper line (L1 L4) to carry all the services video, voice and data with acceptable quality without using excess line capacity. Actual parameters for the lines (L1 L4) are threfore monitored automatically by a monitoring tool (MT1). Thresholds are set for the line performance parameters, such as line stability and packet loss, and are compared by the monitoring tool with the corresponding monitored values. Based on the comparison preliminary values for line configuration parameters for a line, such as bit rate, are generated. Different configuration attempts are compared and a subsequently selected configuration parameter value is sent to the configuration tool (CT1). The latter reconfigures the lines (L1 L4) and the process is continuously repeated.
|
