<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which improves a printing speed in one-way printing and can attain a reduction in processing load while preventing breakage of a carriage, and to provide a printing method. <P>SOLUTION: The printer 10 has a lid detecting means 70 which detects the opening and closing of an opening and closing cover 24, a motor 32 which gives a driving force to move the carriage 31 back and forth, a printing head 38 which ejects ink droplets, a head control means 100 which makes one-way printing of printing to a printing object P only at either one of a forward path and a return path of the carriage 31 carried out, and a driving control means 100 which controls the driving of the motor 32 on the basis of a detection signal from the lid detecting means 70. The driving control means 100 increases a driving speed at the return time which is the other one of the forward path and the return path of the carriage 31 when one-way printing is carried out.
