PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a martensitic steel exhibiting high hardness/high corrosion resistance, hardly causing cracks after quenching/subzero treatment and having excellentmirror finishability. SOLUTION: The martensitic steel has a composition cpntaining, by mass, 0.15 to <0.70% C, 0.05 to 1.00% Si, 0.05 to 1.00% Mn,≤0.030% P,≤0.030% S, 0.001 to 0.50% Cu, 0.05 to 0.50% Ni, 11.0 to 18.0% Cr, 0.05 to 2.0% Mo, 0.01 to 0.50% W, 0.01 to 0.50% V, 0.05 to 0.40% N,≤0.02% O,≤0.080% Al and 0.0005 to 0.0050% B, and the balance substantially Fe with inevitable impurities, and satisfying 0.4%<C+N<0.7%, and C/N≥0.75.
