The sensor has a coil (16) combined together with a capacitor (10) to form inductor-capacitor (LC) resonant circuit (14). The coil is operated as a frequency-determining component of a measuring oscillator (26). The natural frequency of the measuring oscillator amounts to 1 mega hertz such that a output signal of the oscillator (26) and an output signal of a reference oscillator (30) are delivered to inputs of a mixer (28). A low pass filter (32) extracts low frequency sidebands from an output signal of the mixer. A frequency/voltage converter (34) is attached to an output of the filter.
