PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp that will not rupture upon lighting and will not suffer chipping of a tip of a holding cylindrical body located on an arc tube side even if an electrode-side portion of a sealing conductive part inserted to a side tube is inclined downward in the diameter direction with respect to the axial direction. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp comprises: a sealing body having the side tube provided at each end of the arc tube; a glass member disposed inside the side tube; a metal foil disposed along the perimeter of the glass member; an electrode core rod disposed to extend from the side tube to the inside of the arc tube; an electrode provided at the tip of the electrode core rod; and the holding cylindrical body disposed between the perimeter of the electrode core rod and the inner surface of the side tube, the tip of the holding cylindrical body located on the arc tube side being processed into a tapered shape. The holding cylindrical body comprises a small-diameter portion located on the arc tube side, a large-diameter portion located on the glass member side, and a tapered portion connecting the small-diameter portion and the large-diameter portion to each other.
