<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oxidation catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas which can obtain an excellent catalyst activity in lower temperature for a particulate and a hydrocarbon of high boiling point in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: The oxidation catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas consists of a composite metal oxide which is shown by a general formula of Ln<SB>y</SB>Mn<SB>1-x</SB>A<SB>x</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, wherein Ln is one kind of metal selected from a group consisting of Sc, Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, A is one kind of metal selected from a group consisting of Ti, Nb, Ta and Ru, x satisfies 0.005≤x≤0.2 and y satisfies 0.9≤y≤1.
