<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating device having high use efficiency of light, emitting light with preferable luminance and having a preferably corrected image plane curve of a condenser lens, and to provide a projection type image display device equipped with the illuminating device and having less unevenness in the luminance of projecting light. <P>SOLUTION: The projection type image display device 1 has an illuminating device 12 including an LED 2R, a rod integrator 3R and condenser lenses 4R, 5R, 6R 7R in a red light side. A columnar rod integrator 3R has an exit face 32R formed so that, in a plan view, an exit face 32R side of a side face is cut along a curved line from one end to the other end of a shorter side, that is, in a curved state with vertexes of the exit face 32R as start points. The radius of curvature of the exit face 32R is almost equal to the radius of curvature of the entrance face 41R of the condenser lens 4R.
