VARIABLE EXPANSION-RATIO ENGINE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable expansion-ratio engine with superior fuel economy capable of preventing deterioration in fuel economy in a predetermined low-load region. SOLUTION: This variable expansion-ratio engine includes: an expansion-ratio adjuster 100 for adjusting an expansion ratio of the engine; a load detector for detecting an engine load; and a controller 70 for controlling the expansion-ratio adjuster 100. The controller 70 controls the expansion ratio such that the expansion ratio at the time when the load is below a predetermined load value is set lower than that at the time when the load is equal to the predetermined load value.
