PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize color separation in which total color material amount does not exceed the limiting value for the total color material amount while keeping density characteristics of the outputs in forming a color separation table for dark and light n color outputs from four color inputs, and to actualize to control graininess and color material consumption by performing optimum color separation considering the color material amounts of the four colors so that light color material amounts can be controlled in the entire color region. SOLUTION: The color separation method constitutes a process for converting an image signal into signals of color materials used in a recording device. The color separation method performs conversion into color material value signals, which include color material values of dark color materials and of light color materials. The method includes a step of deriving a total amount of dark and light color materials from the relation between the limiting value of the total color material amount and the color material amount used in the recording device including the color material amounts of the color materials other than the dark color materials and the light color materials, a step of deriving the density expressed by the total of the dark color materials and light color materials, and a step of deriving respective color material value signals of dark and light color materials from the total color material amount and the density.
