PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a resist adjustment with a simple constitution by adjusting an image forming starting position according to a position of a conveyed recording sheet. SOLUTION: A system controller 105 is provided in a carriage 100, and has an optical sensor 101 to detect a front end and side ends of a recording sheet. According to the detection signal, the controller moves the carriage 100 in a main scanning direction, and the recording sheet in a sub scanning direction at predetermined timings, respectively, so as to form an image on the recording sheet. The controller then detects the front end of the recording sheet before printing by the optical sensor 101, moves a printing means in the main scanning direction until both side ends of the recording sheet are detected, detects and specifies the position of the recording sheet, and adjusts an image forming position on the recording sheet by using the specified position.
