PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the production of a polymer by living anionic polymerization capable of producing a polymer having stably controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution independent of the combination of the kind of polymerization initiator, solvent and monomer, polymerization temperature, etc. SOLUTION: The method for the production of a polymer by living anionic polymerization is carried out by adding an alkali metal salt of a thiol such as a thiol lithium salt to the system.
