PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk discriminating method which can discriminate between a DVD-RAM disk being a DVD-RAM1 or a DVD-RAM2 and a DVD-RW disk being a DVD-RW or a DVD+RW, through they cannot be discriminated by distance from a suface of a disk to a recording plane, the nuber of layers of recording planes, and reflectance, and disk reproducing device. SOLUTION: When the optical disk is the DVD-RAM disk or the DVDRW disk, Push-Pull system tracking error signal amplitude is measured by a microcomputer (2120) in a state in which servo control is performed by a focus error signal (2110). Discrimination is performed by the Push-Pull system tracking error signal amplitude (2130), when the Push-Pull system tracking error signal amplitude is larger than the prescribed value, it is judged that the optical disk is the DVD-RAM (2130), when it is smaller than the prescribed value, it is judged that the optical disk is DVDRW (2130).
