PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control gelling when producing a material having strength hardly broken under use, and imparted by introducing absorptivity of water and an organic solvent to a polysaccharide derivative such as cellulose, chitin and chitosan originated from nature and being a biodegradable polymer material. SOLUTION: The method for controlling the gelling of a biodegradable gel includes forming a mixture containing 5-100,000 pts.wt. water, 5-10,000 pts.wt. weak alkali aqueous solution or 5-1,000 pts.wt. organic solvent based on 100 pts.wt. polysaccharide derivative, irradiating the mixture with 0.1-500 kGy radial rays to crosslink the polysaccharide derivative to afford the biodegradable gel, and is characterized by the control of the gel fraction of a crosslinking degree by regulating the temperature at the radial ray irradiation so as to be within the range of from -196°C to 100°C.
