As the feeder (10) moves to its second position (2), sensors (31, 32) on the feeder and at the second position, are brought into signaling arrangement. Based on a measurement signal transmitted between sensors, the sheet number on the feeder and/or at the second position, is determined. Ultrasonic sensors are used. The sheet number is determined when the sheet (20) cuts through a transmission signal. Sheet number determination takes place with the feeder stationary. The feeder releases the sheet at the second position, laying it down. Offset to the side of the second position, further acoustic sensors (34, 35, 36) detect the unintentional presence of sheets. After sheet release, a spring (10) moves sensors (31, 35) into a signaling arrangement. Based on a signal transmitted between first and second sensors, unintentional sheet availability is detectable.
