Provided are a polymer electrolyte for a lithium secondary battery which is improved in mechanical strength and is excellent in swelling properties and lifetime, and a lithium secondary battery containing the polymer electrolyte. The polymer electrolyte comprises 100 parts by weight of a nonaqueous organic solvent which comprises 40-70 vol% of gamma-butyrolactone and 5-15 wt% of a halogenated ethylene carbonate represented by the formula 1(wherein X and Y are identical or different from each other and are independently H or a halogen atom; and n and m are 1 or 2); 0.5-10 parts by weight of a gel forming compound; and a lithium salt. Preferably the polymer electrolyte further comprises an organic peroxide or an azo compound as a polymerization initiator. |
