A robot cleaner and a method of operating the same are provided to return the robot cleaner to a charger quickly by dividing guide signals determining the heading direction of the robot cleaner into a header signal and a data signal to be sent to the robot cleaner by different communication methods. A robot cleaner comprises a signal transmitting unit(130), a transmission control unit(120), and a control unit(110). The signal transmitting unit includes at least one infrared ray transmitting unit(132) transmitting data signals and an RF(Radio Frequency) transmitting unit(131) transmitting header signals. The transmission control unit controls the operation of the signal transmitting unit and power. The control unit applies the control signals, controlling transmission of the header signal and the data signals, to the transmitting control unit. The control unit transmits the header signal through the RF transmitting unit and then drives the infrared ray transmitting units sequentially, thereby allowing the data signal to be transmitted to different areas sequentially without intervals.
