An apparatus and a method for supporting a relay service in a multi-hop relay BWA(Broadband Wireless Access) communication system are provided to execute synchronization and cell searching easily based on the mobility of an RS(Relay Station) by providing a synchronous channel to the RS and an MS(Mobile Station) and to eliminate a near-far interference between relay communication and direct communication in a cell by applying time multiplexing. When a BS(Base Station) allocates relay resources to the second RS, the second RS communicates with the BS at the first time domains(721,731). The second RS obtains specific domains(711,713) within the second time domains(723,733) and provides a relay service to an MS. One-way subframes(720,730) are time-multiplexed into the first domains(721,731) and the second domains(722,733). In this case, the second domains(722,733) have a fixed length or can be dynamically changed according to a cell environment. The second RS executes communication with the BS at the first domains(721,731) of an RS-2 frame(710). At this moment, the second RS provides a transparent relay service to the MS during the first domains(721,731). Also the second RS executes communication with the MS at the specific domains(711,713).
