A robot cleaner and a method of operating the same are provided to control the operation of the robot cleaner by sensing action of a human body with a human body sensor during cleaning. A robot cleaner comprises a human body sensor(20), a traveling unit(60), and a control unit(10). The human body sensor senses the movement of a human body within a predetermined range. The traveling unit determines the traveling speed and the traveling direction of the robot cleaner. The control unit outputs a control signal to the traveling unit so as to control the traveling speed of the robot cleaner based on pre-set data when the movement of the human body is detected by the human body sensor. The human body sensor is a PIR(pyroelectric infrared) sensor.
