An electrical or optical connector, for use underwater and capable of being mated remotely, has a ball joint to allow for misalignment of the connectors. A receptacle 3 has a contact pin 7, and a plug 1 has a female contact part receiving this. The plug has a rear handle 11 allowing the coupling or uncoupling of the connector, for example by a remote-controlled vehicle. The rear body part 15 of the plug has a cavity 19, capturing with limited angular displacement in axial alignment a ball-joint element 13 rigidly fixed to the rear handle, the ball-joint element being held in along the axis of the plug by a spring 35, the ball-joint element also comprising at least one longitudinal spline (31, Fig 2) designed to engage into a complementary groove in the rear body part of the plug, locking, with limited play, any freedom for the ball-joint element to rotate relative to the body of the plug. |
