A method of forming a metal matrix composite article and a metal matrix composite weld involves forming a zone of molten metal 4 using a laser, hot gas or electron beam 8 and adding fibrous material 8 to the zone 4 in a directionally controlled manner as it is moved. The metal which is melted may be the surface of a substrate or be powder 6 or foil introduced into the laser, hot gas or electron beam 8. The fibrous material may comprise one or more continuous fibres 8 or elongate fibrous particles (e.g. at least 0.7 mm long) (6, Fig. 3) which are directionally guided along a channel (7, Fig. 3) into the molten metal 4. The method may be used to make articles by build-up welding and for welding components together. |
