The method involves successively selecting lines of a screen, and performing a column selection mode for selecting each column with a selection signal passing from one state to another state with an intermediate level. Another column selecting mode is performed for selecting each column with another selection signal passing from one state to another state without the level. The former mode is replaced by the latter mode, and the latter mode is maintained for the column as long as deselection of the column is carried out during scanning of the screen. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for controlling a matrix screen (2) a screen system e.g. matrix plasma screen, incorporating a matrix screen controlling device.
