Means for mounting a tube 2 on a shaft 13 comprises a circumferentially-split outer bearing race 8, 9 mounted in a housing 3 of the tube 2, the split portions 8, 9 being movable apart axially of the bearing against a crimped spring ring 16 urging them to their normal position which defines an outer track 17 for balls 18 mounted in a cage 19. The tube 2 may be a transmission shaft guard which may be designed for use with the inner bearing race 23 on a yoke member of a universal joint 12 of the shaft 13. The tube 2 can be mounted on the shaft 13 by relative axial movement thereof in one direction and is not removed by an axial force producing opposite relative movement. The leading portion 9 when fitting the race 8, 9 on the shaft 13 is urged against an abutment 10 by the spring ring 16 which allows the portion 8 to be moved against it. To move the portions 8, 9 apart manually so as to remove the guard 2 from the shaft 13 there is a projection 26 on the portion 8, or a member attached to the latter, projecting through an aperture 27 in the housing 3. |
