The present invention features methods for recruitment of bone marrow-derive d stem cells (e.g., endothelial cell precursers, hematopoietic stem cells) by administration of nicotine or other nicotine receptor agonist. The methods o f the invention can be used in, for example, treatment of conditions amenable to treatment by recruitment of bone marrow-derived stem cells (e.g., neutropenia). The figure is a graph showing the capillary density (capillaries/myocyte) and the percentage of new vessels incorporating endothelial progenitor cells for saline control animals and nicotine treated animals.
