<PICT:1012343/C1/1> <PICT:1012343/C1/2> To break a sheet of glass along a given curved score line, the sheet 1 is placed on a support 4 of small width, the median line of which follows approximately the curve 2 of the score line and a force is applied on both sides of the support 4 and at a predetermined distance from the support sufficient to cause the sheet 1 to break along the score line. The supports 4 project upwardly from a plate 5 and pressure members 6 are provided secured to a plate 7 movable up and down by an air cylinder 8. Score lines 3 between the curved line 2 and the edge of the sheet 1 are provided to divide the surrounding strip, as is normal in breaking by hand. The support 4 may be of wood and is normally about 6 mm. wide for sheet thickness of 5 mm. The members 6 are of rubber and about 4-5mm wide and spaced from the supports 4 by about 5 mms. The presser member may be continuous or discontinuous and to start the break, (1) the support 4 may be slightly raised, (2) the members 6 may be slightly lowered or (3) the spacing apart of the presser members altered at the desired position. As shown in Fig. 3, several pieces may be cut in one operation, e.g. roughly triangular deflectors EFG and HIJ are scored and the presser members 6 lie along the dotted lines only with the supports 4 below the scores, the breaking being started by raising the supports 4 at positions EG and H1 so that it continues along the direction of the arrows f, f1 without presser members, the diagonals EG and HI being very close together, if desired.
|
