Data items each having an associated tag or address, not all the tags being necessarily different, are sorted into groups each having the same tag in a number of passes of the original data past reading means, the items associated with a single tag being transferred to an output store in each pass, and being " ticked off" in the original list as this is done. In each pass the first " unticked " tag read is selected for transfer. As shown, data input is by punched tape 200 (preferably in loop form) read at 21-28 and a tick may be punched in column 8 at 29 by relay 129. Tags are punched on to a tape 400 at 51-57 (a tag is identified by a hole in column 7) and the tag and its associated data (in following positions on tape 200) may be punched into output tape 300 at 31-37. Tape drive motors 128, 138 and 148 and punches 129, 139 and 159 are operated as follows:- Motor 128 is operated continuously whenever a tag (address) is read to give a signal on line 207 and no address stands in 40 (no signal on 407) the tag read is punched at 50 and 30, and motors 138, 148 advance tapes 300 and 400 one step (this brings the punched tag on 400 to the read position 40); punch 129 ticks off the tag. All following data read is punched at 30 until an unticked tag not the same as that standing in 400 is read, when punching ceases until a tag the same as that in 400 is again found, when it is ticked and transferred to 300 with the following data. At the " end of pass " signal from 60 over lines 602-703 the tape 400 is advanced to clear 40 and enable the first unticked tag in 200 to be entered in 300 and 400 as the second tag to be listed. The operation continues until all tags have been ticked.</p> |
