A dryer and a method for controlling thereof are provided to eliminate foreign material by driving a blowing unit at initial stage and to solve cleaning problem of the filter, thereby preventing carbonization of the foreign material and fire. A method for controlling a dryer comprises the steps: installing a filter to be close to a heater to prevent foreign material from being infiltrated into the heater, and eliminating foreign material accumulated on the filter and the heater by driving a blowing unit at initial stage(S100); and progressing a dry stroke using hot/dry blast by driving the heater after eliminating the foreign material(S120). The dryer comprises a duct, the heater, the filter, the blowing unit, and a micro processor. The duct guides external air to the drum. The heater is installed in the duct and heating air. The blowing unit regulates air flow of an internal part of the duct. The micro processor controls the blowing unit to eliminate foreign material collected on the filter and the heater.
