In a water heating apparatus the final stage of heat transfer is accomplished through direct radiant heating of water passing a radiant heating element. In the form shown a luminous wall gas firing unit 10 is vertically mounted at the side of the apparatus. The water to be heated enters the apparatus through inlet pipe 20 and thereby to the uppermost pan 18 of a series of substantially horizontal pans alternatively offset from each other and each with one end adapted to provide an overflow into the next lower pan. The water flows back and forth across the pans and down a vertical screen 27 suspended from the end wall 26 and in front of the luminous highly radiant firing face 13 of the gas firing unit 10, and then into the hot water reservoir 16 in the bottom of the apparatus. The combustion gases rise towards the exhaust flue 28 preheating the water in the pans. A series of air tubes 29 may be installed in a compartment 30 at the top of the apparatus above the water pans to condense any water vapour and provide optimum furnace efficiency. The apparatus may serve a combined heating and hot water supply system. A pump 35 delivers hot water to the radiator 17, the cooled water re-entering the apparatus at the inlet pipe 20, and a pump 33 delivers the hot water for general use. To keep the water level in the reservoir constant a ball valve 31 controls an inlet valve 32. A pump 34 may be provided to re-circulate water in order to maintain a predetermined temperature of the water in the reservoir.
