PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory system capable of using an operation mode for directly accessing a nonvolatile semiconductor memory without increasing the number of external connection pins and to provide a controller. SOLUTION: The memory system is provided with a NAND type flash memory 4, a host interface 51 for receiving a command and an address outputted by a host device 2, and the controller 3a which operates in a first mode for converting the address received by the host interface 51 and using the converted address to access the NAND type flash memory 4 and in a second mode in which the host device 2 uses the address received by the host interface 51 to directly access the NAND type flash memory 4 and controls switching operation modes between the first mode and the second mode in accordance with the command.
