The present invention relates to a household appliance (10) such as an oven, a refrigerator, or a washing machine. The household appliance comprises an exciter element (14) mounted to a surface (12) of the household appliance such that a first electric signal applied to the exciter element causes a corresponding first vibration of the same, which first vibration is transferred to the surface, and a second vibration occurring in the surface is transferred to the exciter element, which generates a second electric signal in accordance with the second vibration, wherein the exciter element is one of a magnetostrictive exciter element and an electrodynamic exciter element. The present invention also relates to a method for generating a sound in a household appliance, a method for detecting vibrations in a household appliance, and a method for controlling a household appliance.
