PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimode optical fiber production method having less production processes and providing a wide bandpass in each of a long and a short wavelength band. SOLUTION: A base material for the multimode optical fiber is formed in such a manner that a refractive index profile parameterα1 assumes any value of 2.05-2.15 in a first region present between from the center of a core and to a radial position where a refractive index lowers 70% between the maximum and the minimum index, and in such a manner that difference (α1-α2) between the refractive index profile parameterα1 in the first region and a refractive index profile parameterα2 in a second region assumes any value of 0.15-0.30, the second region being present between from the boundary of the first region and to a radial position where the refractive index lowers 95% between the maximum and the minimum index.
