PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in electromagnetic transducing characteristics and durability without any possibility of deteriorating a magnetic head. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having at least a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a non-magnetic supporting body, the ferromagnetic powder is ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powder having 10 to 40 nm average plate diameter, a monolayer surface composition image formed by observing the surface of the magnetic layer under low acceleration voltage of 2 kV or below includes particles each having 100 to 6,000 nm<SP>2</SP>/one piece and including Zr and the total area occupied by the particles including Zr is 0.02 to 1.0% to the surface of the magnetic layer.
