PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a torque detecting method and a torque detector capable of detecting accurately a torque generated by a magnetic field. SOLUTION: The torque generated by the magnetic field of a fan-shaped magnet 1 is converted into a force to rotate a rotary shaft 3, and the converted force is measured by a load cell 5. This detector of the present invention is provided as its constitution with a coil unit 2 arranged opposedly to the fan-shaped magnet 1, the rotary shaft 3 attached with the coil unit 2, and the load cell 5 for measuring the force for rotating the rotary shaft 3. The rotary shaft 3 is penetrated through a support block 4 via a bearing 6 to be installed substantially vertically. Alternatively, the center axis is substantially conformed with the rotation center of a balance plate 12 balanced in a fulcrum (knife edge 11a) to attach the rotary shaft 3 substantially horizontally.
