Stable chlorinated paraffins of low viscosity and predominatly containing 9 carbon atoms are compatible with paraffin hydrocarbons such as spindle oil and may be used as lubricants in metal working, for example in the form of cutting oils. The chlorinated paraffins are prepared by trimerizing propylene, hydrogenating the resulting product and then chlorinating it (see Division C2).ALSO:A plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride comprises a stable chlorinated paraffin of low viscosity and predominantly containing 9 carbon atoms. The plasticizer may be a chlorinated 4,6-dimethylheptane having a chlorine content of 20-75% by weight or 50-65% by weight, or may be the product obtained by trimerizing propylene, hydrogenating the resulting product and then chlorinating it (see Division C2).ALSO:Stable chlorinated paraffins of low viscosity and predominantly containing 9 carbon atoms are prepared by trimerizing propylene, hydrogenating the resulting product and then chlorinating it. The invention also comprises a chlorinated 4,6-dimethyl-heptane having a chlorine content of 20-75% by weight and a chlorinated 4,6-dimethylheptane having a chlorine content of 50-65% by weight. An example is given. Comparative examples describe (i) the hydrogenation of tetrapropylene to isododecane followed by chlorination of the latter, and (ii) chlorination of a liquid petroleum paraffin having the same molecular weight as isononane. |
