[Also in Divisions G2 and H1] A magnetic or other information bearing tape 12 is cleaned by passing it between a fixed tungsten carbide blade 40 and a moving tungsten carbide blade 42 held by a spring. Ceramic discs 50 and 52 (the latter not being visible in the Figures) are on a common shaft and press on the edges of the tape to remove particles thereon. Aligned notches 54 in the discs and spaces in front of the blades provide a channel for the gas stream. The cleaning apparatus is incorporated in testing equipment for newly manufactured tape, and may include a magnetic sensing head which, by means unspecified, senses particles which are not scraped off and reverses the tape for a second pass through the scraper. If after a preset number of passes a particle is not cleared, the tape is stopped for inspection. A further cleaning section (Figs. 6 to 10, not shown) uses two gas streams to vibrate the tape at 13 kc/s. to remove particles held by electrostatic attraction.</p> |
