The silver image on the exposed sound track area of a photographic monochrome or multicolour reversal film having one or more light-sensitive layers containing a dispersion of a colour coupler dissolved in a coupler solvent is developed by a process comprising developing the film in a developer which forms a silver image only, contracting the sound track area of the film with a solution of the compound. in which R 1 to R 4 are alkyl aryl or aralkyl groups and Z is an acid anion e.g. halide, sulphate or phosphate ions, to stabilize the sound track image and thereafter fogging the unexposed silver halide, colour developing the film and treating the film with a silver bleach bath. The solution of the quaternary ammonium compound may contain a silver halide fixed, e.g. sodium or ammonium thiosulphate.
