<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white light LED which brings out RGB components having reproducible color points, and which emits uniform white light. <P>SOLUTION: The white light LED 20 comprises a blue LED 22, over which is affixed a preformed red phosphor plate 26 and a preformed green phosphor plate 28. In the phosphor plates, to form a plate, a controlled amount of phosphor powder is placed in a mold and heated under pressure to sinter the grains together. The phosphor plates can be made very smooth for all the surfaces. An ultraviolet LED can be used, in conjunction with red, green, and blue phosphor plates. The LED dies come in various colors and luminances. Phosphor plates with different characteristics are produced, in accordance with their light output characteristics so as to obtain a targeted white point.
