PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus where the recording contents originally desired to view can be selected correctly and viewed, by selecting a reproduction picture of program contents on which a cursor is placed at the present, in a screen for selecting the recording contents, beforehand. SOLUTION: Program contents and metadata of the program contents are recorded on a recording medium, while being associated with each other. When program contents to be reproduced are selected, an attribute selection list 501 is displayed on a screen of a display. Program contents, having attributes selected on the attribute selection list 501, are extracted from the recording medium and are displayed as a program selection list 502. A moving image of the program contents of a cursor placed on the program selection list 502 is superimposed on a motion picture window 500.
