PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which magnetic nanoparticles hardly fuse and which is smooth and high in film strength. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer and a non-magnetic layer successively on a support. After the magnetic layer is coated with magnetic nanoparticle suspension which has dispersed magnetic nanoparticles of a numerical average particle diameter 20 nm or smaller, is dried up, and the magnetic nanoparticles are fixed, annealing is performed and ferromagnetized. A non-magnetic layer includes hydrolysate of a silan chemical compound represented by a general formula (1): (R<SB>10</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-Si(X)<SB>4-m</SB>and a gel composition in which at least one kind of a partial condensation polymer gels. In the general formula (1), R<SB>10</SB>represents either a substituted or non-substituted alkyl group or a substituted or non-substituted aryl group, X represents an OH group or any hydrolyzable group, and (m) integers 1 to 3.
