A method of determining the volume of open and closed hollow bodies, pits and also garden waters (V) is claimed which comprises the steps A. where necessary charging V with water, B. introducing a defined amount M_B of reactant and indicator having a defined transition point, C. addition of water from V to reactant and indicator from step B in an amount until the indicator shows a colour change, if appropriate determination of the added amount of water V_c, D. addition of a defined amount M_D of a substance which changes the properties of the water, E. addition of water from step D to a defined amount M_E of reactant indicator, until the indicator indicates a colour change, if appropriate determination of the added amount of water V_E, F. determination of the difference D between the amounts of water, V_c and V_E, added in C and F, G. determining the volume V from the measured parameters difference G, pH, hardness and/or redox potential of the water at the transition point of the indicator and the amount of substance added in step D. Using the claimed method, it is simple, even for lay persons, to determine the volumes of unknown size.
