The exhaust gas cleaning system calculates the level of nitrous oxides in the engine exhaust gas from the detected position of the accelerator pedal and the engine revs, used in conjunction with the operating temperature of the exhaust gas catalyser (13) detected at a number of points, for controlling the hydrocarbon feed for the catalyser, to ensure catalytic conversion of the nitrous oxides. A feedback device (30) may be used for feeding back part of the engine exhaust gases back to the engine air intake, with the hydrocarbon feed for the catalyst corrected during initial acceleration.
