PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent shock at a time of restart while securing restart response at a time of engine restart after idling stop. SOLUTION: A hydraulic control device for an automatic transmission provided with an idling stop control means stopping an engine when a predetermined condition is satisfied, is provided with a first oil channel discharging working oil from an engagement element for start, a second oil channel supplying working oil from an oil pump to the engagement element for start, and a third oil channel discharging working oil from the engagement element for starting when a shift position other than start position is selected. The first oil channel is provided with a pressure hold valve holding fastening hydraulic pressure of a fastening element for starting during oil pump non-operation time, the second oil channel is provided with a check valve inhibiting circulation of working oil to the oil pump from the fastening element for starting , and load applied to the piston by the hold fastening hydraulic pressure is higher than elastic force of a return spring when the clearance is at the maximum.
