An inexpensive high-efficiency single-phase motor obtained by employing a stator core having a profile of good blank layout while ensuring the magnetic path of a core back. The single-phase motor comprises a stator core (1) formed by laminating a plurality of magnetic steel sheets and provided with N slots where N/2 is an odd number and a part of the slots are large slots (4) while the other slots are small slots (3) shallower than the large slot (4), a main winding (6) of single-phase two-pole concentric winding system inserted into the large slots (4) or the small slots (3), and an auxiliary winding (7) of single-phase two-pole concentric winding system inserted into the large slots (4) or the small slots (3) and located at a position other than 90° electric angle with respect to the main winding (6), characterized in that such slots out of the N slots as having a smaller space factor of winding than the others because of the auxiliary winding (7) being arranged at a position other than 90° electric angle with respect to the main winding (6) are small slots (3) and the other slots are large slots (4).
